WordPress – Update WordPress

Video Tutorial

Script & Screenshots

In this video I’m going to show you how to update WordPress to the latest version.

First, I always recommend running a backup of your website.  You can do this using many different plugins.  The plugin I like to use the most is the UpdraftPlus Backup and Restoration.  It backs up the database, themes, plugins, uploads, and other separately.  That makes it easy to restore what you need.  Check out the Updraft plugins tutorials under the WordPress Plugins tutorials.

After you’ve run a backup, you can update WordPress whenever you’re ready.  There are three ways you can find the update.  All three buttons take you to the same page, the WordPress Updates page.

You have the option to Update Now or Download the updated files.  I like to use the Update Now button since it does all the work for you.

When you’re ready to do the upgrade, click on the Update Now button.  Only click on it once.  If you click on it multiple times the installation could fail. Depending on the speed of your hosting, this could take a minute or so for it to complete.  Sit back and wait for it to finish.

Once the upgrade is finished, you should receive a message thanking you for updating.  If the installation fails, it will let you know.

Once it completes, I suggest going through your website to make sure all the pages still look good.  It doesn’t happen often, but sometimes an upgrade can cause a conflict with your theme or a plugin.  If it does, you may need to do a restore to get it back to where it was until you can find a solution for the problem.

That’s it for this video.  I’ll see you in the next one.
