WordPress – Reading Settings

Video Tutorial

Script & Screenshots

In this video we’ll go through the Reading Settings.

Click on Settings.

Then Reading.  There are only a few settings.

The first setting is ‘Blog pages show at most’.  This setting lets you choose how many blog posts are displayed per page. Setting a higher number of posts to display on each page can potentially impact load times on your blog, since you will be loading a lot more data with each page. The default setting is 10 posts per page to ensure fast load times.  For this video we’ll leave it at 10.

Syndication feeds show the most recent lets you set how many blog posts will be sent out at once via your RSS feed.  These aren’t used as much as they used to be.  We’ll leave it at 10.

For each article feed, show.  You can select full text or summary.  Full text means that the entire contents of a post are included in the feed. Summary means that only the first 55 words are included in the feed, along with the option to continue reading the rest of the post.  I’m going to leave it at the default.

Next to The Search Engine Visibility box is:  ‘Discourage search engine visibility’.   I only suggest checking this box if you are setting up your site and you don’t want people to see it until it’s ready or if you want the website to be for only certain people and you don’t want the search engines to find it.  If you’d like it to be found by the search engine, leave this unchecked, then google and other search engines will index your content.  This setting goes along with the Update Services setting on the Writing Settings page.  To learn more about this, watch the Reading Settings video under WordPress tutorial then Settings.

When you’re done, save your changes.

That’s it for this video.  I’ll see you in the next one.
