In this video I’m going to show you how to buy a domain.

In this video I’m going to show you how to buy one through Godaddy.  I use them because they’re one of the cheapest.  You’ll want to do some research to see what registrar fits your needs best.

Here are some tips on choosing a domain name.  For most businesses, it is best to find a domain name that has your company name, service, or product in it.  I would recommend buying a dot com if it’s available.  If you’re an organization like a non-profit, then a dot org would be good.  Avoid any trademark infringements.  This could cause you many problems down the road.  See a link below the video to search for any trademarks.  Make it as short as possible.  One or two words is best.  This makes it easier to type and easier to remember.  Be Creative, Unique and Brandable.  Building a distinct brand that stands out from your competitors is no easy task, but it begins with your brand and domain name.  If you’re having trouble coming up with a domain, there are many Domain Name Generator tools that you can use to help you come up with one.  Google domain name generator and many website will come up that you can use.  Godaddy will also give you some suggestions if the domain you choose is not available.

Type in the domains you are considering.

Click on the Search Domain button.

If the chat box comes up, click on the X box to close it.  Or if you have any questions, you can type them in here.

If the domain you searched for is taken, it will tell you Sorry your domain is taken.  If you’re really set on that domain, click on the link next to Still Want It? Here’s what you do.  From here, you’d need to pay for the Domain buying service.  They will then contact the owner to see if the domain is for sale and what their asking price it.  This service is a non-refundable $70 plus commission.  If they are unsuccessful acquiring the domain, you will be out the $70.

Here is where it will give you some suggestions of other possible domains that are available.  On the right side of the screen you will see what they suggest.

On the left, I currently have all extensions showing.  You can check any of the boxes to narrow it down to .com, .org, etc.

I’m going to check .com and .org as those are the most popular domain extensions.

Now over on the right you’ll see only .com and .org suggestions.

Another way to narrow down their suggestions is to change the Character Length amount from No Max to a lower number.

As you can see, I don’t have many suggestions when I have a low character length.  So you might need to go a little higher than eight.

Now I’ll try searching for another domain.

This domain is available.  So if it’s one I’d like to purchase, I’d click on the Select button.

When you’re all ready to check out, click the Continue to Cart button.

Now comes all the up sells.  To start, they will ask if you’d like to make your domain information private.  If you’d like to hide your contact info from being public, you’ll want to add on the private registration.  There will be a yearly fee to keep it private.  They will also ask about adding email accounts.  Depending on your hosting, you might get free email with it.  If you’re unsure, you can always purchase this later.

They’ll also try selling you other items.  If you’re not sure what you need, I’d just leave it all as No Thanks and click Continue to Cart at the bottom of the page.

Keep clicking the Continue to Cart button.

Now I’m at the checkout page.  The term of the domain they have set as the default may vary.  They have set mine to 5 years.  If you’d like to change it, click on the drop down arrow and select the term you prefer.

I’m going to change it to one year.  Sometimes it’s cheaper to buy one year then add more years later.  Notice the price is currently at $14 a year when I have 5 years selected.

And now that I’ve changed it to one year, it’s only $12 a year.

If you have a promo code, enter it on the right by the pricing and then click Apply.  You can usually find a code for a new purchase.  But renewals are hard to find any promo codes.

When you’re ready, click on the Proceed to Checkout button.

If you’re new to Godaddy, click on Continue under New Customers.  Returning Customers, enter your login information and click the Login button.

I’m going to click on Continue as if I’m a new Customer.

Fill out the information and then click the continue button.  Then on the next page, look over all the information and make sure everything is correct.  Then you’ll click on the Purchase button and then you’ll be set.

That’s it for this video.  I’ll see you in the next one.
